• At least I

  • I’m waiting for a good idea.

It’s basically like waiting for night bus, without a timetable (and which you’re not completely certain even exists), on a Glasgow morning in February. Will it ever come? Am I more likely to be physically assaulted first? Why is it so cold? It can get a bit harrowing sometimes, this ‘waiting’ business.

Because, selfishly, no national newspaper yet wants to employ me to write little witty pieces about life, love or train travel between Munich and Beijing, I’m going to have to blog about something to prove myself first.

But what? Blogs can literally be about anything which is the kind of open brief that turns my brain to soft, fat-free cheese. Clearly the obvious things for me to write about are music, politics, how much I wish I was living in New York or being young and unemployed.

Yet if I said to any potential reader, ‘I’m going to write about weird music that I find from all over the planet’ you’d either (rightly) think that there were too many John Peel-lite bloggers clogging up the internet already or you’d go and read one by someone whose parents could afford send them out to actually meet these musicians all over the place.

The same goes for the other subject matters too. Writing a blog about how much the Labour party have done or how amazing it is to go for a walk in Washington Square, Manhattan might make me feel good but it’ll be stood right next to a load of other blogs that will be well-informed and written by better-connected and more popular people.

So I need a better idea.

The problem is that I’m actually not a very ‘different’ person. I mean I’m 22, like music and have been to (and fallen in love with) New York. Though I hate to admit it, I’m as mainstream as James Morrison or arachnophobia.

It would be much, much better if, instead of my normal interests, I had growing passion for lower league hockey or inflatable fruit… unfortunately though; neither of these things gets me going in the slightest.

This ‘good idea’ is just stubbornly refusing to appear.

So, in the mean time, I’m going to look on the bright side. My ‘at least I… ‘ blog will highlight all the things that are good about the world, other people, or me. So that next time I get no reply from a job I really want or hear about how happy everyone else is, I’ll be able to look back at this and think ‘oh well, it could be very, very much worse’.

Let me know what you think too and then, maybe, within a reasonably short time, we can become sunshiney, happy people who don’t care that we’re unemployed/unloved/in prison/sick/unintelligent or whatever.
